Sun SolarisSolaris, Sun's Unix version, was actually the successor of SunOS, going back to1992. SunOS was originally based on the BSD flavor of Unix, while SunOS versions 5.0 and later are based on Unix System V Release 4 (rebranded as Solaris).
How did this happen? Let's go further back in time. SunOS version 1.0 was introduced in 1983 with support for Sun-1 and Sun-2 systems. Version 2.0 was introduced in 1985 -- its claim to fame was virtual file system (VFS) and NFS. In 1987, AT&T and Sun announced that they would work together on a project to merge System V and BSD into one release, based on SVR4. Solaris 2.4 was Sun's first Sparc/x86 release. The last release of SunOS was version 4.1.4 in November 1994. Solaris 7 was its first 64-bit Ultra Sparc release and added native support for file system metadata logging. Solaris 9, introduced in 2002, added support for Solaris Volume Manager and Linux capabilities. Solaris 10 was first introduced in 2005, which has a number of innovations, including support for its new ZFS file system, Solaris Containers and Logical Domains.
Solaris is presently up to version 10; the latest update was released in October 2008. Among its innovations is support for paravirtualization, where Solaris 10 is used as a guest in Xen-based environments.
Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. Solaris is free and open source, distributed through the OpenSolaris operating system. Solaris is a more command-line based Unix operating system than HP-UX or AIX. As a practical matter, it does not have anything comparable to System Administration Manager (SAM) on HP-UX or System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) on AIX. Solaris runs on Sparc and x86 environments. It also has the newest file system around -- ZFS, which has made great strides in recent years, including the ability to now use it as its root file system. ZFS has the potential to be the best all-around Unix file system. Solaris has many ways to implement virtualization, including Containers/zones, xVM Server, Logical Domains and hardware partitioning.
Hewlett-Packard HP-UXHP-UX, Hewlett-Packard's Unix, was originally based on System V release 3. It initially ran exclusively on PA-RISC HP 9000 platform. Version 1 of HP-UX was released in 1984. Version 9, introduced its character-based graphical user interface (GUI), SAM, from which one administrates the system. Version 10, introduced in 1995, brought changes in the layout of the system file and directory structure, making it similar to AT&T SVR4. Version 11 was introduced in 1997 and was HP's first release to support 64-bit addressing. In 2000, it was rebranded to 11i, when HP introduced operating environments, bundled groups of layered applications for specific IT purposes. In 2001, Version 11.20 introduced support for Itanium systems. HP-UX was the first Unix that used Access Control Lists (ACLs) for file permissions and was also one of the first to introduce built-in support for Logical Volume Manager. Today, HP-UX uses Veritas as its primary file system due to the close partnership between Veritas and HP. HP-UX is currently up to release 11iv3, update 4.
Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. HP-UX is the first of the Unix systems to allow its customers to purchase specific operating environments. For example, if you are looking for its high availability (HA) product Serviceguard, you would purchase the specific product that bundles in HA. HP-UX is the only version that uses a third-party file system -- Veritas (Sun used to offer this many years ago). HP has many forms of virtualization, including nPartitions, vPars, Integrity Virtual Machines (IVMs) and resource partitions. This does have a tendency to confuse some folks because there are so many choices. HP-UX runs on both HP 9000s and Integrity Itanium systems. HP-UX 11v3 can support up to 128 processor cores. HP-UX provides for a very strong command line in addition to its menu bases system, SAM. Performance tuning using kctune is in many ways simpler to what AIX and Solaris offer.
IBM AIXAIX was introduced by IBM in 1986. While it is based on Unix System V, it also has BSD roots and, more than any other flavor, is a hybrid of both. AIX is the first OS to introduce a journaled file system (JFS). It was also the first to have an integrated Logical Volume Manager (LVM). IBM first ported AIX to its RS/6000 platform in 1989. Version 5L was a breakthrough release introduced in 2001 that provided for Linux affinity and logical partitioning with the Power4 servers. In 2004, AIX introduced virtualization in AIX 5.3. Advanced Power Virtualization (APV) offered micro-partitioning, shared processor pools and Symmetric multi-threading. In 2007, IBM enhanced its virtualization product, coinciding with the release of AIX 6.1 and the Power6 architecture. It also rebranded APV to PowerVM. The AIX enhancements included a form of workload partitioning called WPARs, which are similar to than Solaris zones/Containers but with better functionality. The latest release is AIX 6.1.
Fundamental differences and unique characteristics. IBM is widely recognized as having the best virtualization product on the midrange, PowerVM. Some recent innovations include live application mobility (allowing one to fail over working partitions without taking downtime), Active Memory Sharing and multiple shared processor pools. No other flavor of Unix can boast these virtualization characteristics, nor can they match IBM's 40-year history of virtualization -- PowerVM has evolved from mainframe/System z virtualization.
AIX runs only on IBM Power Systems -- easily the most powerful of midrange Unix servers. IBM sells the fact that AIX runs exclusively on Power as a plus because it is fully optimized on this architecture and it has a clear road map around which the company adheres to religiously. It should also be noted that one can run both Linux and AIX partitions on this platform. Its LX86 virtualization add-on allows one to run x86 Linux applications that are not ported to the Power architecture. AIX has always had an integrated logical volume manager, unlike other flavors that require add-on products. AIX is the only Unix that has continued to grow market share in recent years, partly because of the capabilities of its Power hardware that continues to lead the field in reliably, availability and scalability.

Unix operating systems are not updated as frequently as Windows and Linux OSes, and their end users like it that way.
IT pros who run IBM's AIX, Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX or Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris say they're happy with the frequency of their OS uploads and fixes; they don't want to be in a perpetual state of updating or patching their operating systems, which often run mission-critical applications. HP, for example, recently released the newest of its semi-annual updates to HP-UX 11iv3, which debuted in 2007.
IBM's latest major release of AIX also came out in 2007, and the last major release of Sun Microsystems' Solaris came out in 2005. According to IDC analyst Al Gillen, commercial Linux and Windows operating systems, are updated more frequently than Unix
Every three years or so, Microsoft has a full new release of Windows Server, but the upgrade cycle is punctuated by several service pack releases of fixes and R2 feature roll-up releases that can be major. Early Linux proponents cited the fast pace of updates and patches as a major benefit for that open source operating system. Over time, though, business users balked and Red Hat Inc., for example, agreed to slow down to a more Unix-like pace.
"I think twice a year is about all I can handle," said Mike Gruen, the IT project manager for Bernalillo County, N.M. "I am doing all the Unix stuff myself, plus a bunch of other things. If we were to get a dedicated Unix administrator, I could see more frequent updates. The way it stands now, twice is all I can support."
The county recently moved from older PA-RISC-based HP servers to Itanium boxes, all running HP-UX. The government also recently migrated its juvenile detention center application from Windows to HP-UX. Gruen does security patches as they come out, and then big updates as HP provides them.
Fewer OS updates, less disruptionThe infrequency of updates creates a more stable environment, Unix users say. Gillen added that much it is a matter of the OS's maturity as well.
"The frequency of Linux updates is going down some, and that reflects the maturing of Linux," he said. "But irrespective of how often the releases come out, if there is good support, customers will try to stick with a particular release as long as they can. They're going to try to extend the life expectancy as much as possible."
Gillen added that operating system providers try to release OS updates that cause as little disruption to applications as possible.
"They realize that creating updates that cause impact beyond the OS level is considered a concern by customers and is a blocker for adoption," he said. "If a vendor wants acceptance of a certain update, they need to keep it as nondisruptive as possible."
Paul Sikora, the vice president of IT transformation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which runs all flavors of Unix and Linux, says that IBM's strategy for AIX is to release an intermediary "technology levels" update every six months, and then have service packs and other security fixes in between. UPMC's strategy is to minimize major updates to once a year and then fill in the holes where needed.
"For the past two years, our modified service plan is apply a major OS release, its latest [technology level] and its latest [service pack] once a year," he said. "Everything in between is ad hoc. We review each fix, determine its importance to our environment, and decide if we will apply it."
If IT decides to apply a fix, they work with application owners to get it installed. If they delay, Sikora makes sure they are aware of the risk.
"I've been quite satisfied with this service plan," Sikora said. "It fits pretty well with our release schedule."
Unix market share continues to decline, mainly at the expense of Windows and Linux, according to recent IDC figures. In September the research firm reported that Unix revenue was below the $1 billion mark for the second consecutive quarter, with revenue down almost 40% annually.
But Unix still represents a multibillion-dollar market, which will take years to whittle down. Sikora said the university runs AIX and HP-UX for Oracle and other databases. He says those operating systems have good backup and clustering features and that Unix plays an important part in every one of the data center's enterprise servers.

InMage Systems expanded support for server virtualization platforms with the latest version of its disaster recovery software. DR-Scout version 4.2 includes support for Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V, as well as increased support of Microsoft Sharepoint Server.
InMage also changed its licensing model and added reporting, data migration and role-access monitoring to DR-Scout.
DR-Scout uses machine-level agents, an onsite host server and a remote target server to provide local backup, CDP and application-level consistency, and remote-site replication for DR. DR-Scout is platform-independent, offers heterogeneous support for SAN, NAS and iSCSI systems, and can do point-in-time or event-based restoration.
The 4.2 release adds support for XenServer and Hyper-V to its existing support of VMWare. DR-Scout can also now export metadata, clone the virtual environment at the remote site and automatically re-create it when necessary.
DR-Scout is integrated into XenServer's and Hyper-V's hypervisor virtual machine (VM) manager, so that administrators can choose to protect either individual applications (through Microsoft's Volume Copy Shadow Service and other APIs), individual disks, individual virtual machines, groups of virtual machines or the entire physical server. While VMware doesn't allow integration of DR-Scout with its ESXi hypervisor manager, DR-Scout's VMware protection is similar to its XenServer and Hyper-V support.
Matt Reynolds, CIO of the San Francisco-based law firm Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin, is a DR-Scout 4.0 user who welcomes the XenServer support of XenServer. "We're a big Citrix shop," he said. "In fact, Citrix is very much a part of our DR solution. We mirror the office desktop with XenApp Server, so when lawyers in remote locations log in and authenticate, they essentially see the same office desktop. There's no learning curve for remote access, they can be anywhere in the world."
According to Reynolds, DR-Scout's ability to perform rapid recovery helped when his company decided to move to a CDP and DR solution. "One of the features of DR-Scout which was incredibly attractive was its bidirectional replication," he said. DR-Scout allows quicker disaster recovery and requires less administrator intervention. "Now I'm limited just by the amount of bandwidth."
Beyond virtualization, InMage also extended DR-Scout's CDP and DR support to all editions of Microsoft Server 2008 (including 32- and 64-bit), Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 on Itanium. DR-Scout also now offers file-level protection for Itanium versions of HP-UX 11iv3 and IBM AIX 6.1.
According to Rajeev Atluri, CTO for InMage, DR-Scout provides push-button failover support for most versions of Exchange, SQL Server, Blackberry Server and SAP, as well as new versions of Oracle, Oracle for Linux and MySQL.
InMage has also increased support of Microsoft SharePoint in DR-Scout 4.2. DR-Scout now treats the entire SharePoint farm as a single unit, so it can do push-button full SharePoint Server-level failover. Reynolds says that his law firm plans to add DR-Scout's suppot of SharePoint by year-end.
Other upgrades include improved reporting features, role-based access control, granular account monitoring, and a new capacity-based licensing model. "We added this [capacity licensing] because there are quite a few storage vendors that OEM our software, and it's easier for them to sell it as a capacity-based licensing mechanism," Atluri says. While a few OEMs are migrating to the capacity-based licensing model, Atluri says InMage will continue its host-based pricing model for most deals.
According to Lauren Whitehouse, an analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, the new features in DR-Scout 4.2 will help InMage "take advantage of the shifts in virtualization and platforms that are becoming catalyst events for people to take another look at their data protection. For a [dot] release, they actually have a lot of new features in the product." She added that InMage "excel[s] in being able to rapidly recover an environment and application data. They're not host-based, and they're not tied to a specific piece of hardware."
InMage recently announced expansion into Europe and the Asia Pacific Region, and recently closed a $15 million Series C round of funding led by Intel Ventures.
The company sells its software primarily through OEMs that integrate DR-Scout or re-brand the product into their own storage solutions. The company's OEM customers include Marathon Technologies (everRun), Quest Software (Quest Recovery Manager for Exchange), and iStor Networks Inc. (iS325 storage system). Its competitors include EMC's RecoverPoint, Double-Take Software and CA's ARCserve and XOsoft solutions.
InMage's host-based pricing model includes server and agent licenses. For virtual environments, InMage offers a server license that includes four agent licenses. Atluri says typical installation prices range from $10,000 to $100,000, depending on individual customer configuration.
